Each encounter with a patient is a moment of truth. Will the experience drain us of our personal resources, or will it nourish us, enliven us, even inspire us? The quality that makes all the difference, and which we have under our own control, is presence!
Presence refers to, "a purposeful practice of awareness, focus, and attention with the intent to understand and connect with patients." It is possible to learn to use presence to enhance our relationships and wellness as healthcare providers.
Marie Haverfield, Ph.D., is an internationally recognized scholar in the field of healthcare communications. She co-authored, along with her colleagues Donna Zulman and Abraham Verghese, the Stanford Presence 5 model of clinician patient communication.
In this lively and interactive workshop, Dr Haverfield will provide us with proven strategies to bring the quality of presence to all of our interactions. This will be an opporunity to enhance our own wellness and relationships while also learning new clinical skills.
